Welcome to the Kastoria Linux Society
The open community for technology, innovation and Free Software at the University of Western Macedonia.
We have been active in Free and Open Source Software in Kastoria and at the University of Western Macedonia since 2011. We started out as the Linux Team and, through continuous growth, reached our current form as the Kastoria Linux Society (KLS), in close collaboration with the IEEE Student Branch University of Western Macedonia, Kastoria.
Our purpose? To keep offering new stimuli, open new paths for experimentation and bring the Department’s students into contact with open technologies and collaborative project development.
From our very first steps, we have been outward-looking. Our team has built interesting collaborations with some of the largest Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) communities in the world. Through workshops, presentations and projects, we have worked with communities such as:
The Kastoria Linux Society also takes part in global celebrations, joining and organising events for international milestones such as Arduino Day, Raspberry Pi Day and Software Freedom Day, bringing the worldwide spirit of open hardware and software to our University.
A central pillar of our work is our collaboration with the Open Technologies Alliance (GFOSS / ΕΕΛ/ΛΑΚ). Together, we have organised many activities, seminars and workshops over the years, spreading open technologies within the academic community and beyond.
The highlight of our journey and collective effort was the successful organisation of FOSSCOMM 2020, Greece’s landmark conference for Free Software, which we proudly hosted, bringing together speakers, developers and technology enthusiasts from all over the country.
More recently, our members built a Raspberry Pi Kubernetes cluster (2024), presented at FOSSCOMM 2024 in Thessaloniki, and we keep going with workshops such as “Docker & Home Lab” (2026) and “First Steps in Kernel Space” (2026).
Whether you write code, have just installed your first Linux distribution, or simply want to learn what “Open Source” means, there is a place for you at the Kastoria Linux Society.
Come create, experiment and learn with us!
