About Our Team
The IEEE Student Branch of University of Western Macedonia, Kastoria under number STB11281 was founded in 2012 by Professor Michalas Angelos and a group of students of the then Department of Computer Science (former TEI of Western Macedonia). Now, in the year 2023, our Student Chapter counts members from three departments of the University of Western Macedonia in Kastoria (P.D.M.). Specifically, our members are students from both the departments of the Faculty of Sciences of the P.D.M. (Departments of Computer Science and Mathematics) and the Department of Communication and Digital Media. The main goal of our team is to help our student members to get in touch with new technologies.
To achieve this goal, our Student Branch organizes activities in different fields of technology. Throughout our years of operation, we have organized workshops, seminars and projects on:
- Programming. Specifically, our members come in contact with the world of mobile development, web development and game development.
- Networks. Through examples such as the Cisco Networking Academy and the configuration of network devices (Routers, Switches and WiFi Access Points).
- Exploitation of Arduino, Raspberry and PC hardware.
- Education. Specifically, through the activities, our members come into contact with educational robotics, STEAM (= Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics) and become familiar with the logic of out of the box education.
Thus, the student-members can choose which of the above activities and projects they will participate and join, according to their own interests, with the main aim of getting to know and experiment on cutting-edge technologies.
Besides experimenting with new technologies, the team invests in the extroversion of its members. In this regard, the members take part in competitions (either under the auspices of the IEEE organization or the local community). Some of the competitions we have participated in are IEEEXtreme and Smart Kozani, with multiple entries and awards during the existence of our Student Branch. In addition, we have participated and organized a variety of activities such as:
- Submitting papers or attending conferences e.g. SEEDA-CECNSM, National Conference of Computer Science Teachers, FOSSCOMM.
- IEEE activities at national and international level e.g. IEEE HSYP Congress (IEEE Hellenic Students and Young Professionals Congress) and IEEE R8SYP Congress (IEEE R8 Students and Young Professionals Congress).
- Technology Festival e.g. Festival Athens Makers Mini Faire.
- Professional networking festival e.g. Skywalker Job Festival.
Through these actions, our student-members are challenged with issues that have the sole aim of broadening their horizons, acquiring soft skills and producing material that will set them apart in the work market.
Building a “strong” portfolio, the members who are very active in our Student Branch, have admittedly been very active in their professional careers as well. A fact that is directly reflected in our team, as we have been distinguished both at International and Panhellenic level, with several distinctions both from the IEEE organization and from Panhellenic competitions and conferences, due to the implementation of the members’ projects.
