Report: IEEE Day 2018 – Welcome First-Year Students


A warm welcome was made this year to the first-year students of the University of Western Macedonia, in Kastoria. The members of the IEEE Student Branch of the University of Applied Sciences in collaboration with the Crete Students\’ Association of Kastoria and the Association of Pontian Students of Kastoria organized a fortnight of events titled \”Welcome First-Year Students\” aiming to acquaint young students with clubs and their actions through activities.

The events began on Monday, October 1st where the IEEE Student Branch members held a presentation on their team and activities at the Grand Auditorium. At the same time, outside the Grand Auditorium, there were kiosks from all three groups, aiming at the first-year students to be informed about the actions of the groups and to get to know the members.

Next action was IEEE Day, Lab Day, where the IEEE Student Branch team hosted. The aim of this day was to open the doors of the IT research laboratory where the team is housed since its founding and to invite the entire student group to a guided tour at the team\’s premises and to get information on the IEEE, Student Branch, Affinity Groups such as Young Professional and Women in Engineering as well as technological issues in which the Student Branch such as Arduino & Raspberry Pi, Romilos Project, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality as well as issues around it Open Software & Open Hardware.

The Crete-Pontian feast from the Cretan Students Club of Kastoria and the Association of Pontian Students of Kastoria took place at the canteen of the Technological Educational Institute of Western Macedonia with the participation of the students who had fun until late afternoon for the reception of the newest students.

Finally, the fortnight ended with the first Coffee Talk of Women in Engineering, which took place on Saturday 13 October at D\’oro Cafe. The Women in Engineering (WiE) team was there to meet the ladies of the IT department as well as the faculty members. The aim of this meeting was to promote the technology engineer and science engineer as well as to analyze issues in these areas.
