my.cs.uowm.gr — The Student Portal

my.cs.uowm.gr — the home screen with tiles for announcements, timetable, e-secretariat, Open eClass, map, restaurant, library and more

Department announcements on one site, the class schedule on another, eClass somewhere else, and the cafeteria menu in a PDF. For a new student, simply finding information can be a challenge. my.cs.uowm.gr brings it all together.

What it offers

From a single portal, students of the Department of Informatics can reach:

  • department announcements,
  • class schedules,
  • the electronic secretariat and eClass,
  • the student cafeteria menu,
  • a map of campus facilities and bus stops,
  • student welfare services, the library and more.

How we built it

The platform was developed by the Student Branch’s Web Development Team, with the support of the Laboratory of Telecommunications, Networks and Distributed Systems (TNDLab) of the Department of Informatics.

Instead of starting from scratch, the team built on the open-source myUoM project of the Open Software Community of the University of Macedonia — a good example of how open source lets student communities build on each other’s work. The application is written in React and consists of two parts: the student app and an admin panel for managing content.

A small but useful side project came out of this work: a Python script that converts the cafeteria’s weekly PDF menu into structured data, so the menu can be shown directly in the app.

The platform was presented at IEEE Day 2025.

Results

The platform was officially presented to the department in November 2025, and students can send comments and suggestions through an online feedback form.
